Fredrik Lofthagen

Fredrik Lofthagen is the Group CEO of Interel. An independent international consulting group specialising in public affairs, strategic communications and association management.

He is widely recognised as one of the leading European affairs consultants in Brussels with close to 20 years’ experience guiding clients through the EU decision making process. Many of the campaigns conceived and managed by him have had significant impact on EU policy and legislation, ranging from corporate governance to disease awareness, environment and external relations. He was the first consultancy leader in Europe to accept the prestigious SABRE award in the category Public Affairs Consultancy of the Year (2004).

Since his appointment as CEO in 2006, Fredrik has doubled the size of the company through organic growth and acquisitions, expanding from its Brussels operations to become Europe’s largest independent public affairs consultancy with eight practices in six major cities in Europe and North America, coupled with an international network of partner companies operating in 14 different countries. In 2011 he spearheaded the successful completion of a management buyout involving 17 members of his extended management team.

Fredrik has been actively supporting the professionalisation of the public affairs consulting industry. He was the first consultancy leader in Brussels to require all his consultants to join the Society of European Affairs Professionals (SEAP) and to sign up to its code of conduct. He also launched a mandatory course on the SEAP code of conduct during his time on the SEAP board and as the founder and chairman of its membership committee.

Fredrik started his career as a lawyer in Brussels before moving into European affairs by way of a three year employment with the joint EU representation of the Law Society of England & Wales and the Law Society of Scotland. He joined Interel in 1996 and spent his first ten years with the company creating and developing its European Affairs practice.

He holds a master degree in laws (LL.M) from the University of Lund, Sweden. He speaks English and French, besides his native language, Swedish.
