Benno van der Laan heads the Washington DC office of Interel Consulting, Inc. In cooperation with Interel’s offices in Europe, this office provides European Affairs consultancy services to Interel clients based in the U.S. in their own location and time zones.
Many of these U.S. corporations and trade association value the combination of access to on-the-spot EU intelligence and advice at home and to expertise and connections in Brussels and Europe’s major capitals. The Washington DC office is also heading Interel’s activities in other key countries in the Western Hemisphere, including Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

Benno started his career in public affairs and government relations in Brussels in 1991 and over the years he has designed and executed numerous advocacy campaigns in many policy areas, including environment, energy, agri-food, chemicals, intellectual property, and trade. In 2001 Benno opened the firm’s EU affairs office in Washington, DC, pioneering the provision of EU consultancy services in the U.S. He continues to travel frequently to Europe to accompany clients to meetings with decision-makers and stakeholders and to stay in touch with colleagues and realities on the ground.
Before starting his consultancy career, Benno worked in the European Commission.
In addition to his native Dutch, he speaks English, French, Portuguese and German.
